FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Nonverbal communication alone can account for more than half of the "message'' that you convey.
On first meeting a person, people tend to focus on what they can see. They focus on the following in order:
  • colour of skin
  • gender
  • age
  • appearance
  • facial expressions
  • eye contact
  • movement
  • personal space
  • touch

It has been estimated that it takes only about four minutes for the average person to make a positive or negative first impression.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BODY SAY WHAT YOU MEAN:

  1. Be consistent in body, voice, and words.

  2. Dress for the occasion.

  3. Know what your face says. This could range from nervousness to confidence.

  4. Smiling and head nodding are the most powerful nonverbal cues in social attraction.

  5. Stand and sit tall, and you will look and feel more confident.

  6. Initiate eye contact.

  7. Be comfortable with what you are wearing. Do not overdress.

  8. Preview your image on videotape. Listen and watch and correct with friends.
