FIRST
IMPRESSIONS
Nonverbal communication alone can account for more
than half of the "message'' that you convey.
-
On first meeting a person, people tend to focus on what they can see. They
focus on the following in order:
- colour of skin
- gender
- age
- appearance
- facial expressions
- eye contact
- movement
- personal space
- touch
It has been estimated that it takes only about four minutes for the average
person to make a positive or negative first impression.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR BODY SAY WHAT YOU MEAN:
- Be consistent in body, voice, and words.
- Dress for the occasion.
- Know what your face says. This could range from nervousness to confidence.
- Smiling and head nodding are the most powerful nonverbal cues in social attraction.
- Stand and sit tall, and you will look and feel more confident.
- Initiate eye contact.
- Be comfortable with what you are wearing. Do not overdress.
- Preview your image on videotape. Listen and watch and correct with friends.
