OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP

WHAT CAN A LEADERSHIP CLASS DO IN YOUR SCHOOL?

The answer depends on two things: what is happening in your school already, and who is taking the course. Both of the elements change from year to year, and so something that happened last year may not work this year or vice versa.

The following are activities that have been performed by leadership classes:

  • morning announcements
  • managing display cases and bulletin boards
  • blood donor clinic
  • school tour guides for guests and parents
  • peer helping
  • assembly set-up and takedown
  • poster making
  • envelope stuffing for charities
  • organize party for local seniors
  • introduce speakers
  • run BBQ's at lunch
  • proctors for Parent Nights
  • welcome newcomers to school
  • run library orientation
  • timers and scorers for athletic events
  • set-up for activity days
  • run noon hour intramurals
  • guides for Open House
  • co-ordinate assemblies
  • ushers for school play
  • run home form contests
  • run canned food drive
  • Big Brothers or Sisters to elementary students
  • There are many more events and activities that can be handled by a leadership class. What the students need to learn is that leadership can be shown and learned at all levels of organization and running an event. An assembly cannot run if the chairs have not been put in the gym. Design and choose events that suit the abilities of your students. Allow them to succeed in organizing meaningful, real-life events. They, in turn, will learn leadership skills and your school will benefit from their successes as well.
