FUNDRAISING IDEAS

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

This has been called Work Day, Rent-a-Student Day and many other things. The basic principles remain the same. You use your student body as your labour force to do work in the community. When this is advertised to the community in the fall or spring, you often get more requests for help than you have bodies.

Students work in the community on this day for the whole day or for the afternoon, with the proceeds being donated to charity or set aside for Student Activities. The students who choose to work on this day must bring their contract for work and the money that they will receive to school on the day prior to Community Service Day. The contract for work must also be signed by the employer and a parent. The payment for an afternoon of work is clearly established in the contract.

Some students will view this as an opportunity to buy their way out of school for the day. You can attempt to curb this attitude by speaking positively about the charity that you are supporting and making the rules and expectations very clear to them.

The Community Service Day must be a normal school day in that those students who have not found work placements will be required to attend classes for the entire day. This can be an opportunity for those who remain to catch up on work missed or work more closely with their teachers in view of the smaller classes that will be present on this day.

RULES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

  • Only those students with signed contracts may participate in the day.
  • All contracts must be handed in the day before the event.
  • Those students who have not handed in a signed contract must be in their regular classes for the day.
  • Work is advertised in the local paper, and placements can be made for students through their own contacts or those given to the student council office.
  • The main office is given a list of those students participating and this is part of the attendance register for the day of the event. Those students who miss the day and have not handed in their contracts are considered to be truant.
