GOOD, PRACTICAL, USABLE RESOURCES

RESOURCES

It is important to find good resources because student activities cover such a large area and it is useful to use the experience of other people to expand and build your own program. Many ideas will never fit your school's situation exactly, but you can take a good idea or activity from a resource and change it to suit the school that you are in. It is the intention of the CASAA to provide resource materials such as this publication, but there are many other sources to find materials that will suit and enhance your programs.

NASSP - DSA MATERIAL

The ``National Association of Secondary School Principals'' - ``Division Student Activities'' is an important organization for those involved in Student Activities. They have a great resource catalogue available upon request. Write to:

NASSP-DSA, 1904 Association Drive, Reston, Va., 22091-1537, U.S.A.

FAX: (703) 476-5432

The following section lists some of the better NASSP-DSA resource catalogue items.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

  1. HOW TO START A LEADERSHIP CLASS
  2. This is valuable because it gives a good rationale for starting a leadership class. No sense reinventing the wheel when it is already done for you. Good material is also included.

  3. NLTC LEADERSHIP CURRICULUM GUIDE.
  4. It hits all areas of student activities with good examples and good exercises.

  5. LEADERSHIP - SELF, SCHOOL, COMMUNITY
Some good ideas that can be used anywhere.

ADVISING STUDENT COUNCIL

  1. THE ABC'S OF ADVISING STUDENT ACTIVITIES
  2. Very good on the fundamentals. Takes you through all aspects of an Activities program.

  3. A HANDBOOK FOR THE STUDENT ACTIVITY ADVISOR
Excellent summary of all aspects of Student Activities.

STUDENT COUNCIL PROJECTS

  1. STUDENT COUNCIL PROJECTS
  2. Has a great list and explanation of good activities. A great place to get ideas

  3. MINIVERSITY
  4. A source of great ideas with full explanations and contacts (names and phone numbers). There are now two volumes available.

  5. FUNDRAISING FOR STUDENT COUNCILS
An extensive list of project ideas that would be both good fundraisers and just fun even if you didn't want to raise money.

GENERAL INTEREST

  1. COMPUTER AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES HANDBOOK
  2. Good ideas and software recommendations

  3. STUDENT ACTIVITIES - THE THIRD CURRICULUM
Good justification of the value of Student Activities

AUDIOVISUAL AND WRITTEN RESOURCES

  1. LEADERSHIP SKILLS & VALUES VIDEO-TAPE SERIES
  2. Very thorough. Suited ideally to a year-long or full credit course. Well thought out and very useful if you have the time to exploit them

  3. LEADERSHIP FOR STUDENT ACTIVITIES
  4. An excellent periodical that you get for becoming a NASSP-DSA member. I would highly recommend becoming a member - see the back page of the catalogue.

PFEIFFER & CO.

They have changed their name from University Associates. They have an excellent catalogue of material available. Write and ask for it from:

Pfeiffer & Co.
4190 Fairview Street,
Burlington, Ontario
L7L 4Y8
(905) 632-5832 ext. 3001

CAUTION - Their resources are excellent but they are generally expensive. They also will have to be modified, in some cases, for use with your students.

  1. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ICEBREAKERS
  2. 417 pages, 150 activities, $140.00.

  3. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GROUP ACTIVITIES
  4. 431 pages, 150 activities, $140.00. Excellent activities for all needs.

  5. STRUCTURED EXPERIENCE KIT
436 activities, user's guide, facilitator's planning guide, $1,000.00 approx. This is the Cadillac of resources. Obviously cost is a factor and you will therefore have to be creative in your funding. If you purchase the previous 2 resources, you will have much of the same material.

This page is from the book CASAA Student Activity Sourcebook. You can purchase this book from our resource library.
