  Georgette Reed

Georgette started on her road to the Olympics in the swimming pools of Regina as a shy overweight kid. She overcame teasing, stereotyping and prejudice to become an Olympic athlete. In 1986, she was offered a swimming scholarship and attended Washington State University. Imagine her surprise when she arrived at the University and the swimming coach told her that she couldn’t be Georgette Reed the swimmer, because “you’re black and blacks don’t swim.” In August of that year, she joined the swim team and made plans to continue a successful career in the pool; however, things rarely go as planned. In the spring of 1987, a serious shoulder injury and other personal struggles surfaced and effectively slammed the door on Georgette's swimming career. Ironically, this same devastating event opened up the door to an Olympic dream in 1992 and a whole new world of experiences. Georgette showed that a shy overweight black kid can become a swimmer and a shot-putter and bobsledder too.

For many years Georgette has enjoyed helping others identify, realize and "own" their own potential; achieving results greater than they ever imagined. Georgette currently resides in Edmonton, Alberta and is the Head Coach of the University of Alberta Track, Field and Cross Country Program.
